The Weekend In Music - Week #5

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back. (oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)...

This was a highly 'experimental' weekend for me. I was a little bored with the stuff that I had - though I'm not sure how you can be bored with 6,200 mp3s, heh - but I do on occasion get a wild hair to go exploring and see what other folks are listening to out there. I decided to investigate my friends' profiles on last.fm, as well as poke around with other related genres, and I've selected the top 10 tracks that I particularly enjoyed. Have a look!

1.) Bobby Bland - Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City
Bobby Bland - Dreamer
Say what you will about his lack of taste in clothes (eesh, I swear the 70's had the worst fashion taste ever), but this man's voice is pure sweetness. :)

2.) Justin Hayward ft. Jeff Wayne - Forever Autumn

Justin Hayward - Songwriter
I'm not too sure of how I missed this guy before - probably because this is typically a lot 'softer' in tone than what I tend to go for. But this rendition of 'Forever Autumn' is very quiet, soulful, and just the thing when you want to chill out. Nicely done.

3.) Class Action - Weekend (12" Mix Version)
Class Action - Week End
This is another of those 'lost' 12 inch disco classics. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Thanks to discomusic.com for cluing me in!

4.) The Carpenters - Heather
Carpenters - Now & Then
This song is actually a B-side to a much more successful single of theirs, 'Top Of The World' - but I much prefer this track. There are absolutely no words in this song, nor are any needed. Again, this is a lot softer than what I usually prefer, but it's also a nice chillout tune.

5.) B.T. Express - Peace Pipe
B.T. Express - Non-Stop
Pure funk with a hot little Native-American style drumming at the beginning. VERY nice.

6.) Electric Wizard - We Hate You
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
In a word - whoa. This is powerful, very heavy stuff. Filled with slow, menacing stoner-crunch guitar playing and shockingly 'light' vocals, this'll make you sit up and take notice, indeed.

7.) Indeep - Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life
Indeep - Last Night a DJ Saved My Life
I could swear that I've heard this track before, and it's very possible that I might have - this came out in 1983 and I certainly remember that time period in music. However, if I have heard this before, it's escaped me - until now. I love this!

8.) Joe Tex - Skinny Legs (And All)
Joe Tex - Live and Lively
Ohhh, this is hot. A fabulous bluesy beat, a wailing harmonica, and back-and-forth dialogue. How'd I miss this??!!?? :D

9.) Kip Winger Ft. Fiona - Everything You Do (You're Sexing Me)
Fiona - Heart Like a Gun
I know, everyone's made fun of Winger for ages now, ever since the early 90's. But you've got to give the man credit for continuing on, despite that. This song is his reward. It's actually a throwback to the early glam-metal days, which is refreshing, considering the climate of music now.

10.) Kraftwerk - Trans-Europa Express
Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express
This is not normally the type of thing I go for, despite my liking for techno and electronica. Kraftwerk's creations tend to be a little too cold for my preference... but this is strangely captivating. I like the little riffs that go up and down in pitch.

And now, here's this week's picture....
